The Effectiveness of Self-Compassion Training on Difficulty of Emotional Regulation in Students

Abstract
Background  and  Aim: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the  effectiveness of self-compassion training on the difficulty of regulating emotions in students.
Methods: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population was all female students of the last year of high school in Urmia city in the academic year of 2021-2022. 30 participating students were selected using multi-stage sampling method, and they were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. Before the intervention, a pre-test was taken from both groups. Then, the experimental group underwent self-compassion training in 8 90-minute sessions. The Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
Results: The findings showed that teaching self-compassion to the difficulty of regulating emotions of female students was effective (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Considering the importance of regulating emotions in the sensitive period of adolescence; Self-compassion-based therapy can be used to reduce the emotional regulation problems of these students, and it can be included in students' educational programs so that coaches and counselors can teach them the necessary skills.
