Investigating the relationship between psychological capital and academic burnout in students with the mediation of academic engagement

Abstract
Background and Aim: The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between psychological capital and academic burnout, and investigating the mediating role of academic engagement in the second-year high school students of Mahabad city.
Methods: The studied population in this research was all the students of the second year of secondary education in Mahabad city in the academic year of 2012-03, numbering 7730 people. A sample of 366 people was selected using the multi-stage cluster sampling method. To collect data, Luthans et al.'s Psychological Capital Questionnaire (2008), Li and Huang's (2010) Academic Engagement Questionnaire, and Berso's (2007) Academic Burnout Questionnaire were used. Pearson correlation and path analysis were used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between psychological capital and academic burnout. There was a negative and significant relationship between academic engagement and academic burnout. Also, the results of path analysis showed that academic engagement plays a mediating role between psychological capital and academic burnout (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Therefore, providing training based on psychological capital and academic engagement in educational environments will lead to a reduction in academic burnout and better academic performance in students.
